| Cancer cells release soluble
factors that alter important host cell functions such as vascular inflammation,
angiogenesis, immune response, bone remodeling, wound healing, and tissue renewal.
In turn, alteration of these mechanisms of the tumor microenvironment play a crucial
role in shaping the progression of malignant disease and its clinical evolvement
by regulating the survival and growth of cancer cells and their invasion and metastasis
processes.
DPK has designed different in vitro and in vivo quantitative assays for the
biological testing and phenotypic categorization of cancer cells on the basis
of:
1) Host cell response (inflammatory, angiogenic, fibrogenic,
immunogenic/suppressant, osteogenic/lytic) to tumor-derived factors and
2) Cancer cell response to host cell-derived microenvironmental
factors (reactive oxygen species, cytokines and growth factors, cytotoxic agents,
etc).
3) Tumorigenicity and organ-specific metastatic behavior.
Obtained parameters provide functional standards allowing an accurate functional
monitoring of cancer cell lines. They also provide a cancer progression-oriented
functional profiling of interest for the pharmaceutical testing of target-oriented
new drugs.
